WTR Token on Algorand Adopted for Public Water Sustainability in Italy AllinCrypto June 2, 2025
Wateract, built on the Algorand blockchain and home to the WTR token, has been adopted by Gruppo CAP, a public water utility service for over 2.3 million Italian residents.
Gruppo CAP’s adoption of Wateract signals a significant step toward sustainable resource management utilizing blockchain technology.
The WTR token represents real water reuse credits, allowing companies to offset their water consumption and directly contribute to water conservation thanks to Algorand.
How WTR on Algorand is offsetting water consumption in Italy and beyond
In an official press release, Gruppo CAP announced it is now the first governmental utility to implement blockchain-based water credits as part of its sustainability strategy.

From Gruppo CAP, translated from Italian:
“In Italy, only 4% of wastewater is reused, compared to a potential 21%. CAP is already among the leading promoters of reuse: each year, it treats 350 million cubic meters of wastewater at its 40 plants.”
Each cubic meter of reused water is now represented by a WTR token, aligning with strict regulatory standards.
These credits can be purchased by companies to balance their water consumption. Funding from credits has been used to help improve local infrastructure and expand water reuse capabilities across the Lombardy region in Italy.
This isn’t the first time the WTR token has seen real-world utility. Portuguese water management company Indaqua adopted the WTR token to support its own sustainability efforts.
Indaqua serves 600,000 people in Portugal and supports water access for over 1 million people in Angola.
With rising interest in real-world asset applications, Algorand continues to position itself as a leading network for institutional and environmental use cases.
According to the Tokenized Assets Coalition, Algorand ranks among the top 10 blockchain networks for tokenized real-world assets, situated alongside Aptos, Ethereum, the XRP Ledger, and Stellar Lumens (XLM).
What’s Next for Algorand RWAs
The partnership between Wateract and Gruppo CAP sets a strong precedent for blockchain adoption in the public sector.
As governments and enterprises look to achieve environmental sustainability through innovative technologies, the use of blockchain-based credit systems like WTR may become increasingly common.
On Hedera, the Hedera Guardian has been utilized by environmental agencies and the UN to bring carbon credit tracking into a new era with improved capabilities.
With continued interest from public institutions and growing pressure for sustainable practices, WTR is positioned to become a strong project within Algorand’s environmental library.
