Vitalik Buterin Says Replacing Ethereum Virtual Machine Is a Viable Plan AllinCrypto April 22, 2025
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V to help with efficiency and enhance scalability.
Replacing EVM with the open-source instruction set architecture, RISC-V, could help yield efficiency 100 times over.
A replacement would radically change the way Etheruem works, but old workflows, languages, and developers would be able to use existing tools without an issue.
Ethereum co-founder says EVM can be replaced
In Buterin’s April 20 statement, multiple long-term, near-future issues that would and are affecting Ethereum’s future stability were mentioned, including data availability sampling, competitive block production, and zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine proving.

According to Buterin, including the RISC-V architecture would greatly improve Ethereum’s scaling capabilities while being able to maintain existing functions.
For Buterin, replacing EVM could be the only “viable path”, after explaining Ethereum’s struggles against other, technically more advanced networks such as Sui Network and even Solana.
From Vitalik Buterin’s proposal:
“The beam chain effort holds great promise for greatly simplifying the consensus layer of Ethereum, but for the execution layer to see similar gains, this kind of radical change may be the only viable path.”
ETH investors anticipate higher prices after downturn
The news comes as Ethereum struggles to keep up with Bitcoin and other altcoins in price appreciation and investor confidence.
Over the past 3 months since January 2025, Ethereum has fallen from $3,289 to drastic lows of $1,462. Despite the ETH 2.0 major upgrade, Ethereum remains expensive to use and slow compared to other altcoins.
While Etheruem has been heading lower, Bitcoin has remained strong above $80k, balancing itself in a range just above $83k alongside other strong altcoins, including Ripple’s XRP and Cardano (ADA).
For Etheruem, investors believe new radical changes must be made quickly to make ETH a competitive blockchain network against newcomers who are shaking up the web3 scene with improved technologies and future prospects.
